CHAPTER TEN

Thank goodness it was a beautiful afternoon since Waldo and I were kept at great distance from the entrance of the research facility while Dottie did whatever she was trying to do.

The guard shifted his gaze between us and the door as he anticipated Dottie’s departure.

“What does he think?” Waldo asked, making a muscle gesture with his arm where there was not any sort of formation of a bicep. “Does he think I’m going to strong-arm him?”

Both of us laughed and looked at the guard, who did have some very well-formed muscles peeking out of the short-sleeved security guard shirt that even looked a little too tight.

“He underestimated Dottie,” I said, knowing exactly the kinda mischief she was capable of. “At least it’s nice.”

I looked up into the perfect blue sky. Any given spring day in Kentucky the weather could turn on a dime. Heck, any season in Kentucky, Mother Nature insisted on doing her own thing and her own agenda.

Mine and Hank’s wedding was in late fall, and you’d have thought tornado season would’ve been well over by then.

Nope.

Nada.

No!

Mother Nature let a rip-roaring tornado roll through Normal the day before my wedding, knocking down trees and powerlines and even destroying other campgrounds, but it didn’t stop us from getting married.

And guess who married us?

Dottie.

I had no clue she had gotten her online license while piddling her time away in the office at the campground. She claimed her thoughts on getting this online license were that we hosted a lot of bachelorette parties with wedding guests who were there to go to a wedding either at the Normal Baptist Church or even at the Barn, the events center on the Old Train Station Motel property. Maybe one day they’d need someone to officiate the service.

Mm-hmm… I never underestimated Dottie.

She literally could pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Just as I was telling Waldo about Dottie's unexpected talents, she came sashaying out of the building, a victorious twinkle in her eye. She threw a cheeky, exaggerated smile at the guard, who seemed both relieved and wary to see her leaving.

With a spring in her step, Dottie made her way toward us. However, her triumphant exit was almost thwarted by her own enthusiasm. Her long, lanky legs got slightly tangled, causing her to stumble just a bit. She caught herself with a grace that belied her near mishap, turning the stumble into a sort of impromptu dance move.

Waldo and I couldn't help but burst into laughter. Dottie, ever the character, played it up, giving us a dramatic bow as she reached the truck.

"Thank you, thank you," she said, her Southern drawl thick with mock pride. "I do my best work under pressure."

I opened the truck door, and before she jumped in, Dottie reached into her shirt and pulled out a day planner, carefully hidden from the guard's view.

“Managed to sneak back into Emily's office while our friend at the door was distracted with my ‘bathroom emergency,’” she said with a wink.

"What did you manage to find out?" I asked once we were all inside the truck.
